Choosing a Therapist

Sometimes finding a therapist can be quite confusing. there are so many types of therapies to choose from. Here's our top tip guide:

  • Read through the explanation of therapies offered on the Therapies United website (details below). We keep it deliberately brief so it's user-friendly, however something you read may 'strike a chord' with how you are feeling, so make a note and then search for therapists offering this type of treatment.

  • Find someone who is local to you - that way you will be more likely to keep your appointment and if you choose to have regular treatments, then you don't have so far to travel.

  • Contact the therapist by email/phone to find out what the treatment involves. You can explain why you are seeking a treatment too. Ask about cost to ensure your comfortable paying that amount and remember that if you go for regular treatments, some therapists are happy to negotiate a better treatment rate to accommodate you.

  • If you are really unsure about going to a therapist for the first time, look for those who have a professional membership. This means that they are also registered with the professional association of that therapy - to have this they have to prove that they are insured, have credentials and often continue to train through continuous professional development. You can find therapists with 'professional memberships' through our search feature.

  • If you have a serious health condition - such as cancer - or you feel more vulnerable about going for treatments (eg pregnant) then select these options when you search for a therapist. These therapists have proof of their experience of working in these specialist areas.

  • If you are on a low income you might be able to get a treatment for a much reduced rate - selected therapists on Therapies United have agreed to offer this - see the Therapies United website for details.

  • If you wish to try a therapy/therapist for the first time, then save yourself some money by taking part in our Feel Good Promotion - details below.

What a treatment session involves

A therapist should take the opportunity on your first visit to collect some information - about you, your health, lifestyle and why you want the treatment. On subsequent visit the consultation is shorter and aims to help the therapist to review progress. Please note that if a consultation lasts longer than 15 minutes, the therapist may reduce the treatment time accordingly or charge more for the treatment.

Some treatments are clothed - like Reiki, Indian Head Massage, EFT or Reflexology. Others are not (like massage) as the therapist is working in a different way to help bring your body back into balance. Its always a good idea to contact the therapist by email/phone and ask them to explain what is involved.

Cost - therapists generally charge based on the length of time of the treatment. Some treatments an hour in length, and some are shorter/longer. Expect to pay a minimum of £30/£35 per hour. Therapists charge based on their experience, level of training and often to cover their own costs (eg room hire in a clinic). If you can't attend a treatment session that you've booked - please have the courtesy to let them know. All the therapists on Therapies United are self employed and if you don't turn up or cancel with enough notice, then they bear the cost.

Workplace Health and Wellbeing

It is quoted that over half a million people in UK are affected by stress in the workplace costing society £ 3.7 billion each year . Many companies are starting to address the situation offering counseling and stress management information.
Companies recognise the need to help employees balance stress levels and the more switched on ones organise on-site therapists to support this. Many employees can ask their workplace to consider a similar plan. It could be in their best interest as a growing amount of medical research links stress to common health conditions such as high blood pressure. For more info click workplace stress
