Children and Aromatherapy

by Lorraine Murray

How to support children's health

boy with coldAromatherapy has been around since the age of the Egyptians and has been used in the West to help with wide selection of health conditions.

Many childhood conditions can benefit from aromatherapy such as colic, eczema, constipation and restlessness. However adults should be aware that although these are natural oils, they must be used with some awareness and training.

Aromatherapy - Children's Colds

The oils are made from different parts of plants and some qualities of the oils can be very beneficial for colds and the flu. Some of the oils work specifically with the respiratory system and therefore can help clear passageways or help to boost the immune system. However when children's bodies are developing, there are only certain oils you can use safely. Lavender is thought to be a safe oil but as there are at least 6 different types of lavender of which some are quite toxic, it is best to consult a trained aromatherapist for the best oils for your needs.

Aromatherapy - Children's Skin

We all know that children's skin is very sensitive. The skin is the largest organ of the body, so if the child's body is trying to excrete toxins and cannot do it any other way, it will come out through the skin. Skin irritations can be soothed by aromatherapy oils especially with compresses, creams and at bath time. Blending the correct amount of aromatherapy oils for your child's needs depends on their age (it is much reduced than that used for an adult). In the aromatherapy world we always say 'less is more'. Sometimes simply using a base (non-smelling) oil can be very effective too.

Aromatherapy - Colic/Constipation

Some oils are very effective for the digestive system and by using them with a light touch of massage, it can bring much relief to a small child or baby. Massaging gently around the tummy allows you to follow the digestive track and help the body to relax and release.

Aromatherapy - Safety for Children

Aromatherapy oils can quickly affect the nervous and immune system - therefore as children and babies' bodies are still developing, it is wise to choose the right blend, way of applying the oils and type of oils to ensure your baby/child can get the best benefit for their health. Although adults can buy oils off the shelf we advise contacting a clinical aromatherapist or attending our course to ensure you feel safe and supported when using these oils for your children's health.

How To Use Aromatherapy for Children

We are running a course for adults on how to use Aromatherapy oils safely with their children. The tutor, Anne Young, is an experienced aromatherapist and baby massage instructor (and retired nurse) who can advise you on the safest ways to use aromatherapy for your children. She is passionate about using aromatherapy with children and babies.
