What is Indian Head Massage
Originating in the East over a thousand years ago, Indian Head Massage, known as Champissage, (the Indian word for massage is champi), is based on the Ayurvedic system of health which incorporates Indian Head Massage, Yoga, diet and spiritual awareness to help encourage health and well being. Indian Head Massage focuses on helping to balance your energy and adapt to your needs - the uniqueness of you as an individual.
Initially, Indian Head Massage may simply seem to be a massage technique, but the methods used also work and influence the flow of energy (prana - also known as chi) throughout you to help balance your emotions, mind and support physical well being.
The tempo of the massage can be adapted to suit your needs - so quick movements are stimulating and invigorating, whilst slow movements are relaxing and soothing. As a large proportion of the treatment works around your head, it encourages the flow of your circulation to this area which helps to ease tension - particularly tension headache - and helps to improve focus and concentration.
However the name Indian Head Massage is misleading as the routine we teach includes massage of the head, neck, shoulders, back, face and hands to provide a holistic treatment.
Benefits of Indian Head Massage
The benefits that follow help you see why Indian Head Massage is a popular therapy in the UK. As a seated, clothed treatment it is adaptable to many situations including the workplace. Some of the benefits may be:
helping you feel calmer and happier
helping reduce your physical muscular tension
helping to lower high blood pressure
helping reduce tension headaches and stress
helping to increase your energy levels
helping to improve your sleep
helping to open constricted air passages - good for asthma
Top Tips for Trying an Indian Head Massage Treatment
Choose Carefully- Indian Head massage, like most complementary therapies, does have contraindications. Early pregnancy, migraines, epilepsy and certain skin conditions may require further discussion with your therapist before deciding whether to receive a treatment.
Finding a Therapist - Whilst we train our therapists to a high standard, some IHM courses are perhaps less stringent in their training. It pays to find out from the therapist how long their training took, if they are insured and whether they belong to a professional association.
The Treatment - Indian Head Massage is all about the relaxing rhythm and pace - if anything feels uncomfortable or sore - tell the therapist and don't suffer in silence. It may be that the pressure is too strong for you or that the massage needs to be adapted for your needs.
Clothes on ! - One of the qualities that attract people to Indian Head Massage is that it is a clothed massage treatment. If you are asked to remove clothing for this - we urge you to question this.
Detoxing - Indian Head Massage is very good for helping to detox the body so to help it along, try to drink plenty of water after a treatment (or at least 2 - 3 glasses).
Treatments before training - If you want to know whether you would like to learn Indian Head Massage - why not have a treatment. There can be a slight variety in the routine but it will give you a good idea of what to expect.
We include meditation in our Indian Head Massage course as it is a great tool to support your own self healing and, if nervous of trying massage for the first time, it helps to calm your nerves and give you a little more confidence. As IHM is a form of energy healing too, it is important to know a little bit about this and trying meditation can help you experience and understand how energy can come back into balance.

If you wish to know more about meditation, we do offer a wider range of CDs and mp3 downloads. The range we offer includes our Beginner's Meditation CD - Peace In You which offers some very simple ways to try meditation in the comfort of your own home. It works on the basis that you know nothing so we lead you through each meditation step by step to help you relax and reduce anxiety. Many people who buy the CD also use it as a means to improve sleep too.
