Holistic Help to Balance Energy Levels

Does this sound familiar...constantly tired? aching legs and back? feeling unsupported emotionally and/or physically?

One of the key energy centres - called 'chakras' that links to our energy levels is the Root Chakra.

Energy has many meanings but in the context of your wellbeing and health (from a complementary therapist viewpoint) it refers to the flow of energy/life within, around and through your *energy system. The root chakra is an energy centre located at the base of your spine and is linked with your material, physical world but also your sense of survivial and safety...in a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual sense (eg big picture).

(If you're unsure what chakras are - look at section on the website called 'chakras').

*Energy system consists of energy centres (chakras) and an energy field (aura).

chakras

All the energy centres (chakras) are important and work together. However the root chakra is essential as it is what links us to the earth ie it grounds us and gives us that sense of stability, strength and nourishment (if the root chakra is working effectively).

Maybe you'll recall have said things like

  • I'm feeling a bit lightheaded (eg ungrounded) or I can't get a grip on this problem, or
  • I felt really heavy, (too grounded)
  • I feel really insecure (ungrounded)
  • I feel like the grounds has been taken from under my feet (ungrounded)
  • I feel quite grounded/in a good place (grounded)

It connects us to our physical world, the culture we come from and how we perceive our world. It can become over/underactive depending on whether we direct too much energy into it (eg worrying about money, working around the clock, long hours to accumulate lots of material 'stuff' we don't really need) or not enough energy (feeling insecure, unlovable, fearful)...

When a chakra is balanced, it has a smooth frequency and the colour is a beautiful rich ruby red and it's open to the correct size within the body.

If it is unbalanced (either over or under active), the energy may find it difficult to flow through this chakra as it is weak or too dominant. Some of the signals of a weak chakra are...

  • insecurity,
  • lack confidence,
  • fearful
  • depression
  • fear being abandoned
  • feel unlovable

Some of the signs of a chakra that is too strong are...

  • obsession with money/health/possessions,
  • domineering
  • aggressive
  • sleeplessness, can’t relax

This is a chakra that really comes into focus if we have are lacking in energy or our energy fluctuates up and down constantly. If we don't feel supported then how can we keep going? If the tree or plant doesn't have strong roots, take the first big, gust of wind and it will blow over.

Cleansing and balancing the Root chakra

Using visualisation techniques can have a profound physical and mental/emotional effect. Try to do this exercise at least once a day (and if you forget - don't worry... just practice when you can). Use your imagination... try to visualise (or if you can't 'see' try to 'feel').

  • Sit in a comfortable chair (not too comfy as we don't want you to fall asleep!)
  • Back straight, feet on the floor, hands resting on your lap or by your side.
  • Close your eyes and start to focus on your breath - your mind will wander but just keep coming back to your breath.
  • Take a few deep breaths and one an 'in breath' follow your breath down to the souls of your feet.
  • On the out breath become aware of your feet touching the ground - become aware of your heel, toes, soul of each foot and with each breath use this to focus on the pressure between your feet and the ground.
  • Now as you breath out, imagine your feet relaxing - all the tiny bones, muscles are responding to your outbreath by letting go of tension. Do this for a few breaths.
  • Now using your outbreath, imagine you can push your breath out through your feet into the ground as if it was moving through your feet into the ground (don't be logical if you're in a building several flights up... just use your imagination!)
  • Now imagine that with each outbreath through your feet that you have roots coming from the souls of your feet, like a tree or a plant. With each breath these roots become stronger, deeper and wider - pushing their way down into the ground.
  • Try to imagine that at the tips of these roots you can sense the strength in the ground, your feet anchored firmly to the ground through these roots. You can feel a sense of nurture, stabiliity and warmth from the earth at the tips of your roots.
  • Now try to imagine that as you breath in you are drawing up this sense of strength, stability and nourishment (as if drawing liquid through a straw).
  • With each breath in this earthly energy starts to rise up the roots... into the souls of your feet... into your legs (notice any sensations)... imagine it rising up into your hips and connecting with the energy at the base of your spine.
  • Now your root chakra is starting to balance with the flow of energy from the earth... you feel the strength, nourishment and stability. Keep doing this for a few more breaths.
  • Each time you breath, just start to imagine the root chakra becoming clearer and balanced.
If your feet and legs feel uncomfortable or agitated when you do this - please perservere... it's a good sign that you are balancing the root chakra.

Do this excercise as often as you like and especially if you are feeling tired or 'unbalanced'

By balancing your root chakra you are helping to balance your energy levels. So keep trying and best of luck!
