How to have a Healthier Workplace

We spend such long periods of time in our workplace, we should try to ensure that the environment is supporting our health, rather than hindering it. And everything we can do to help the environment wouldn’t go amiss either! Here are some guidelines on how you can take better care.
  • Be a conscious consumer - When it comes to lunchtime or tea breaks, try to use products that contain wholesome, organic ingredients. Taking a packed lunch not only puts you in control of what you eat, but you can avoid lots of wasteful packaging too.

  • Natural Cleansers- Try to persuade the ‘powers that be’ that using natural cleansers and detergents is not only cheaper if you use natural products like water and vinegar to clean glass but is better for the environment. They can buy user friendly items from companies like Green Stationery ..plus it saves lots of toxins filling your work environment too.

  • Plant Power - Plants clean and add oxygen to the air you breathe when you place them in your personal space. Two plants in each regular office room will rid the air of toxins and pollutants while balancing indoor humidity levels. Air purifiers are an easy way to have clean air and are especially useful in open plan offices.

  • Refurbish Sensibly - Encourage your bosses to realise that if you really have to refurbish - try nontoxic paints and varnishes – they are still professional and hardwearing, but they simply lower your exposure to unsafe chemicals.

  • Clear Water - Be aware of the water you drink – try to drink filtered or bottled water (but remember to recycle plastic containers too).

  • A Negative Atmosphere -Negative ions are invisible molecules that promote whole-self wellness found in the clean air atop mountains and near rushing water. Equipping your office with a negative-ion generator or salt lamp will ensure that you feel alert and refreshed whenever you are at work.

  • Recycle - Recycle as much as possible – paper, envelopes, cartridges…

  • Allergies Support - Choosing sustainable wood floors over wall-to-wall carpeting can be very beneficial to those with allergies and sensitivities.

  • Peace & Quiet- Why not dedicate a space for people to spend some quiet time to clear their mind or simply meditate in break times/lunch hours. Regular practise of meditation helps to improve focus, concentration and improve health and wellbeing.
Making a few easy changes in your workplace can provide years of healthy living for you and your colleagues. A healthy workplace is a good foundation for life and encourages everyone to be better informed of their responsibilities to take better health care too.
And if you boss is really mercenary – then advise them that the healthier your environment, the healthier (and more productive the staff) and the less sick days – it’ll save them money in the long run!
